MgO insulated thermocouples are manufactured by incasing the thermocouple wires within a small diameter, flexible, metal sheath. The thermocouple wires are insulated from the outer metal sheath by compacted high purity Magnesium Oxide powder. This form of construction creates a thermocouple which can be made in variety of small diameters and and is available with many choices of metal alloy sheaths. The MgO thermocouples combination of small size and compacted insulation allows these thermocouple to be used applications with high temperatures, high pressures, and corrosive chemicals.

MgO insulated thermocouples are quite malleable and can be easily bent by hand around a mandrel about twice the side of the diameter of the thermocouple. This allows the thermocouple to be installed in tight spaces or around obstacles on machinery. MgO thermocouples have many advantages, some of which are listed below.

    Grounded junctions (G) are standard, but for Ungrounded (U) or Exposed Junctions (E) change the "G" to "U" or "E" in the part number. For Dual elements insert "D" after "4" in part number. Example: 18K4DS9-U-K1-12

    If you would like to change the standard type K thermocouple calibration, substitute the K in the below listed part number with the desired Type B, E, J, K, N, R, S, T, or C calibration.

    If you would like to change the standard Inconel 600 sheath alloy (Richards #9 Alloy Code) substitute the 9 in the below listed part number with the desired sheath alloy listed in the table on the right.

MgO thermocouples with a standard size or mini male plug. The standard plug has solid round pins. We do not sacrifice quality by using hollow pins. The mini plugs can be identified by the smaller flat style pins. A 1/8" NPT 316ss compression fitting can also be specified by adding a (CF) to the end of the part number. A grounded junction is standard for a rapid temperature response.

MgO insulated thermocouples with open terminal heads can be used in clean environments where the terminals can be exposed for easy access. They are also useful in situations where a low profile is needed. The terminal block is ceramic for maximum heat resistance. A 1/8" NPT 316ss compression fitting can also be specified by adding a CF to the end of the part number. A grounded junction is standard for a rapid temperature response.

MgO insulated thermocouple assemblies with a hex fitting (HX) are used where a 316 stainless steel 1/2" x 1/2" Male NPT fitting is desirable for mounting both to the process and to the thermocouple connection head. The hex fittings are welded to the thermocouple sheath for strength and proper sealing. A grounded junction is standard for a rapid temperature response.

MgO thermocouple assemblies with transitions have extension wires attached to the thermocouple to extend the leads. This is beneficial if the instrument is located at a distance from the area where the temperature sensor is installed. A relief spring is also installed on the thermocouple transition to protect the potting from flexing of the wire. A grounded junction is standard for a rapid temperature response.

MgO thermocouple assemblies with armored cable have extension wires protected in a armored cable attached to the thermocouple to protect and extend the leads. This is beneficial if the instrument is located at a distance from the area where the temperature sensor is installed and in locations where the thermocouple leads are subject to potential physical damage. A grounded junction is standard for a rapid temperature response.
